I've noticed a most interesting social phenomenon in our society, the LAN, aptly named by my brother. So what does LAN stand for? No, it's not local area network, though it is something very prevalant and is all around us in Singapore. It's the Local Auntie Network! Yah, its existance has been around since, since...i dunno when..since aunties were around? My mum has this exercise group in the morning and when a group of women get together, they will talk, share abt stuff. They'll have outings together sometimes and give each other food, things, recipes, share tips. And the most important of all, up-to-date information. In this egg-scarce time, they share info about where to get eggs and what's the going rate. I had a 1st hand experience of the power of LAN. One of my mum's "kakis" informed her that eggs were available at the 7-eleven downstairs. My mum said that she'll get them after she sent me to the NEL station. Worrying that she'll not be able to get any of my vital source of protein, I volunteered to help her get it. So happily, I went down 1st. As I stepped out of the lift, I witnessed 2 aunties talking. Auntie A asked Auntie B if she wanted to buy something, I din really hear but imgained it to be eggs. Auntie B shook her head and Auntie A walked off very quickly in the direction of my destination. I hurried along and as I was nearing the 7-eleven, I saw another auntie with her 2 kids. Maybe I was being paranoid but she seemed to be in a hurry to get to the 7-eleven too. Apparently, checking out the eggs shelf was on the top of her agenda too. She seemed disappointed that it was empty and then proceeded to shop around. I was disappointed too, those elusive eggs, where could they be? Since the cashier had gone MIA, I inspected the entire shop to ensure I had not missed them. No sight of my fav brown eggs. When the cashier appeared, I wasted no time asking her. Viola! She actually kept them inside the storeroom! *Righto! I was so pleased to get my eggs! :) the "auntie" part of me was so happy I asked and I got them. I could feel this uncle, who had been standing there all the time, probably a fellow envoy sent by an auntie, boring through me with envy, or so i felt. *Haha...not sure whether he got his eggs though. Feel like I'm part of this conspiracy by the LAN to get their hands on eggs. But guess what happened to the eggs? My mum made instant omelette when she dropped them in the lift. *Sigh. But at least, I got to eat omelette that night. :)
